Dressed in a fur coat, Cee Lo Green emerged in Times Square just before the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve and sang his own version of the John Lennon masterpiece, “Imagine”.

Green changed the lyrics of the song which sparked an immediate controversy. While the original lyrics read as “Nothing to kill or die for/And no religion too,” Green sang it as “Nothing to kill or die for/ And all religion’s true.”

Cee Lo Green, who is currently a judge in the NBC reality show “The Voice” promptly defended his lyrics and tweeted that he meant no disrespect to the late Beatles singer and only wanted to represent the idea of a world where one is free to choose his or her own beliefs and ideas.

Evidently, Cee Lo’s apology was not acceptable to the fans of John Lennon and they expressed their disapproval through Twitter. Cee Lo then removed his tweet and replaced it with “Now playing: We Just
Disagree: Dave Mason.” Green responded to a Twitter inquiry and clarified it by saying that was just a general indifference and not an answer to his performance of “Imagine.” Green then chose not to respond to any further requests for comment from his side.

Yoko Ono also refused to comment regarding this lyrical controversy.  However, she did post a tweet on January 3rd saying “Imagining Peace – that’s something that we can all do together – even when we have different opinions about so many things!”

The previous commotion relating to John Lennon occurred during the summer of 2010 when John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son Sean Lennon tweeted a picture of Lady Gaga playing on the piano that was once featured in the “Imagine” video. At that time, Sean defended Lady Gaga on Twitter in two responses. Now only time will reveal how Cee Lo will handle this lyrical controversy.
